Project Location
This project is located on public Bureau of Land Management property in the _watershed approximately 8.5 Miles of Twickenham, Oregon
Project Need
The recreation area is no longer suited to disperse camping and effects on the John Day Wild and Scenic River and increased use is expected to continue, from recreationists who are being displaced recreationists, increased population growth in Central Oregon, and folks visiting from larger metropolitan areas, such as Portland. Oregon's Senators recently (2021) introduced the Sutton Mountain and Painted Hills Area Wildfire Resilliency, Preservation, and Economic Enhancement Act, which would create a new National Monument, putting this area on the map is likely to further increase recreation use.
Proposed Project Work
This project proposes to develop campsites, install an addition toliet and parking area(s), provide garbage receptables and service, upgrade the boat ramp, close roads and build new road, create a hiking trail, plant vegetation, and implement an irrigation and filtration system.
Project Partners
Project Partners include OWEB, BLM, Wheeler SWCD, Wheeler County, and Mid John Day Watershed Council.
