Project Abstract

Project Location

This project is located in the northeastern part of Wheeler County, Oregon around the town of Spray and encompasses approximately a 15 mile radius.

Project Need

Along Henry's Creek, Kahler Creek, and Haystack Creek into the John Day River this project seeks to reduce infestations of category "B" and "B(T)" state listed noxious weeds. From the John Day River and upland from there are infestations of Leafy Spurge, Russian knapweed, Yellow starthistle, Mediterranean sage, and Scotch thistle.

Proposed Project Work

This project surveyed 2,464 acres and aims to reduce the negative impacts of state listed "B" and "B(T)" noxious weeds by chemical control method. Chemical control is the most effective and readily available control mechanism at this time. A licensed herbicide applicator will apply chemical to 1,267 gross acres and 430 net acres. The top five species this project will focus on are Leafy spurge , Russian knapweed, Yellow starthistle, Mediterranean sage, and Scotch thistle. Wheeler SWCD will collaborate with each landowner the appropriate weed management plan that will benefit their land the best. This project will involve a chemical cost-share component and landowners will be responsible for 50% of the chemical cost.

Project Partners

Project partners include private landowners, Grant SWCD, Wheeler County Road Department, CRWMA, ODOT, USFS, BLM, and ODA.
